What is Eye Lid Surgery?

Eyes are one of the first things people notice on your face, and are also one of the first things to show signs of aging. Properly defined aging is an irreversible, relentless process of tissue degeneration resulting in loss of elasticity and stretching of skin. Eyelids are important indicators of so much of our emotion, so it is important that we keep them young looking and fresh.

Eye lid correction or Blepharoplasty is the medical term for lifting the upper or lower eyelid or removing the lachrymal sacs (hoods) over the eye.  It is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures with both men and women and can be combined easily with other surgery.  Requiring comparatively little surgical impact, tired or sad looking eyes can be given a radiant, youthful appearance without obvious scars.

The Surgical Procedure

After a local anaesthesia has been administered, a scalpel or laser is used to cut along the fold of the eyelid.  This removes the excess skin as well as the muscle and fatty tissue underneath it.  The wound is closed with a tiny suture inside the skin.  Swellings are soothed with cooling pads.

What to Expect After Surgery
Some slight discomfort.  The stitches are removed after 5 days. You can expect an overnight stay dependent upon what other procedures you have had. Social contacts can be resumed after one week. Some swelling and bruising will be apparent.  In the first couple of days after surgery you should always sleep on your back with a raised pillow.  Make up and contact lenses should not be worn for 8 days.
