What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is the medical term for a "nose job". Rhinoplasties are among the most popular but also the most challenging operations.  In simple terms the nose can be reduced, augmented, widened, narrowed, straightened and reshaped by correcting the bones and the cartilage. Similarly, different parts of the nose, tip of the nose and nostrils can be altered with surgical and minimally invasive procedures.

The nose is the feature around which the face finds

it's axis; it is the anchor of the facial features and by

improving nasal contour one can radically improve their overall appearance. Rhinoplasty is perhaps the most complex cosmetic procedure as it combines treatment of both function and form; the nose not only has to look good it has to work well. Rhinoplasty highlights the delicacy of both aspects of surgery; art and science – the balance of form and function. A better nose tends to improve your health as well as your looks.

Dr Mooney is a rhinoplasty specialist surgeon and currently performs the highest number of rhinoplasty procedures in Australia. You can be assured that your care is with a highly skilled and experienced surgeon.

The Surgical Procedure

Rhinoplasty is performed under a general anaesthetic and takes around two hours. Dr Mooney favours the ‘open-structure’ rhinoplasty technique. This involves a small incision between the nostrils, which leaves an almost imperceptible scar. This technique affords the best access and results, especially for a twisted nose and for tip deformities. It is the best technique to achieve the perfect nose.

The tip of the nose represents the greatest challenge to surgeons.  Achieving a good tip contour is the difference between an adequate and excellent nose. Dr Mooney has developed a ‘Diamond Tip’ technique that provides superior results. These results have been assessed by independent, qualified observers, and the favourable outcomes presented at several international meetings. We frequently see patients who are unhappy with the result of a previous rhinoplasty and often it is the tip that they have found disappointing. For both these patients and first time candidates open-structure rhinoplasty combined with the Diamond Tip is ideal.

In detail, the procedure begins with incisions within the nostril rim and between the nostrils. The nasal ‘skeleton’ of bone and cartilage is meticulously remodeled to achieve the new nasal contour. The skin is then re-draped over the new frame and all incisions are closed. During the procedure problems such as airway and sinus issues, snoring and rhinitis (allergy) can be surgically treated.

As well as treating functional problems, rhinoplasty can be combined with other cosmetic procedures. These include Thread Lifts, Blepharoplasty (Eye Lid Surgery), Lip Augmentation, Otoplasty (Ear Correction Surgery), Face-Lifts, Facial Implants, and even other simple Injectable Rejuvenating Fillers or Anti-Aging Treatments.  Dr Mooney will be happy to discuss all these options during your consultation.

What to expect after surgery

When patients wake up, they are often surprised that pain isn't a big feature in the postoperative period, but they may have some bruising and swelling. An overnight stay is routine and two weeks off work is typical. Patients are required to wear a splint over the top of their nose and have a  stitch under their nose until both are removed at seven days. Dr Mooney reviews each patient closely in the post operative period, and is always available if there                           are any queries or issues.

After two weeks patients usually look completely normal but the final result can take a few months; and sometimes up to a year if it has been an extensive procedure.  These final changes are usually only minor and can only be noticed by the surgeon and patient.  In the short term there is a minor risk of bleeding and infection, but these are most unlikely.  It is the exception for the patient to not be satisfied with the outcome, particularly if preoperative preparation has been thorough and compliant.  However post-operative follow up continues thoroughly with Dr Mooney until the patient is completely happy with their new nose.
